How it Works

Part of speech tagging is an area of Natural Language Processing in which a high degree of accuracy has been obtained. Using the latest advancements in neural networks, a human-like precision can be obtained. In addition to providing an English part of speech tagger, this has been adapted to work with other languages.

The nine parts of speech in English are typically taught in schools: noun, verb, article, adjective, preposition, pronoun, adverb, conjunction, and interjection. There are, however, a plethora of additional categories and subcategories. The multiple, possessive, and single forms of nouns can all be distinguished. Many languages also mark words for case, grammatical gender, and other factors, whereas verbs are marked for tense, aspect, and other factors. Different inflections of the same root word are assigned to different sections of speech in some tagging systems, resulting in a huge number of tags. Other tagging methods utilize fewer tags and ignore fine discrepancies, or characterize fine differences as attributes unrelated to part-of-speech.
